In 2016, Reed College students protested a film showing Boys Don’t Cry by lesbian filmmaker Kimberly Peirce, claiming that the use of Hillary Swank, a non-transgender woman for a lead role, amounted to violence against transgenders. Students swore at Peirce, saying such things as “Fuck you, scared bitch.”
